At that time, the college appointed Michael Maltzan Architecture as its partner in planning academic spaces and expansion of its educational resources. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier.

The garden not only respects the historical context of the manor but also addresses contemporary environmental concerns. The primary bedroom, reenvisioned by Pulte Interiors, is a testament to the delicate balance of maintaining original elements while introducing modern aesthetics. The room now features a sophisticated palette and strategically placed fabrics to delineate various zones within the ample space, offering privacy and openness. Redefine the existing media landscape with visually innovative, narratively engaging personal filmmaking.

The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. Each designer reshaped a space and contributed to a collective narrative of rejuvenation and homage to the manor’s storied past. The Pasadena Showcase House of Design thus stands as a beacon of community support and design excellence, inviting tens of thousands of visitors to explore and be inspired by the convergence of past and future, tradition and innovation.

With nearly 200 design and visual arts courses, ArtCenter Extension (ACX) offers a world of possibilities. Our program is designed for busy adults, with courses held during the day, in the evenings and on weekends. Our instructors are practicing artists and designers who understand how to maintain a competitive edge in the creative fields. About 5,000 people attended a week’s worth of graduation activities, ending with conferring degrees in majors such as film, fine art, graphic design and photography. ArtCenter built its reputation as a vocational school, preparing returning G.I.s for work in the commercial arts fields[5] and began awarding degrees in 1949. In recognition of Art Center's commitment to addressing social and humanitarian issues through design, 2003 saw ArtCenter become the first design college to ever receive NGO (non-governmental organization) status by the United Nations.

Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. “Our two main goals were to create a space that was comfortable and a little bit updated while also retaining that history and not touching or harming all the really cool features that were innate to the room and came with the house,” Meloche says. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. In 2012, ArtCenter announced the expansion of South Campus with the acquisition of a former U.S. Postal Service property adjacent to the existing campus, made entirely possible through the college's philanthropic efforts.

In Pasadena, a spectacle of design and innovation unfolds each year as the Pasadena Showcase House of Design opens its doors. This year’s 59th Pasadena Showcase House of Design is housed in the historic Potter Daniels Manor, a Pasadena City Landmark. This event not only celebrates the creativity of local designers but also supports community arts programs, blending aesthetic splendor with philanthropic spirit.

Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile. By then, the couple had grown Hanna Andersson into not only a major success but also a force for social good. In 2003, the UN Department of Public Information granted it the status of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), recognising its work in raising awareness of social and humanitarian issues through art and design. ArtCenter College of Design is recognised for its vocational training, and it provides career support for its students by organising workshops, careers mentoring and work experience. It also provides a vast number of public programs for children and younger students, as well as ‘ArtCenter at Night’; a range of more than 200 adult evening classes.

Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper. A black-and-white triangular mosaic tile floor by Artistic Tile from Mission Tile West puts a contemporary twist on the classic checkered pattern. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. The gardens are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring fire-resistant planting to protect the estate while enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Complementing the primary residence is a two-story gatehouse and a four-car carriage house with a chauffeur’s quarters. The estate’s flat, flower-filled grounds and meandering pathways lead to a rear terrace offering yet another vista of the Arroyo Seco. Over 25 local interior and landscape designers restored and reimagined the historic Tudor manor, crafting each room and garden space to revitalize and respect the home’s original architecture while infusing modern elements. Designers featured in the showcase include Elisa Read, Steven Cordrey, Rachel Duarte, Rachel Scheff, Amy Peltier, Carmine Sabatella and B.

At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. A post-war boom of students forced the school to expand, and in 1949, it began awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts. In addition, to open up the building windows and skylights were strategically cut into the thick street-front concrete walls and the roof, bringing light into classrooms and studios while making the program visible to the street. The intention was to create a unique system for light and environmental control while bringing in a filtered light that is critical for drawing and design studio instruction. The skylight system is constructed of three translucent ETFE films stretched on a custom-designed structural frame. These layers are inflated or deflated to adjust the amount of natural light and heat entering the building. The sculptural elements rest in the rooftop garden that is covered in native grasses and form the boundaries of what is now the campus quad. The college provides undergraduate and postgraduate programs in art and design, including interdisciplinary programs, and courses in advertising, transportation design, illustration and environmental design.

It was incorporated in 1930 as a degree-granting institution of higher learning in the US created specifically for students of both the visual and design. It offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Science Doctor of Arts, and Doctor of Science degrees across multiple majors mostly relating to design. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. As one of the country’s oldest house and garden tours, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design benefits the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, an all-volunteer organization that contributes to arts and music nonprofits in Southern California. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar.

In addition to Vargas’ commencement address, graduation ceremony attendees will also hear from Nini Chen, recipient of the Spring 2024 Student Leadership Award, and Satoko Okuno, the graduating class’ valedictorian, who will both deliver speeches. In 2021, the City of Los Angeles honored Vargas by naming September 8 Robert Vargas Day, in recognition of his contributions to the cultural life of the city, to the arts and as a leading creative force. Then last year, he was honored again by the City of Los Angeles, which designated the intersection of First Street and State Street as Robert Vargas Square. He recently completed a 150-foot-tall mural of Los Angeles Dodger Shohei Ohtani on the outer wall of The Miyako Hotel’s flagship Little Tokyo hotel in Downtown L.A. A contemporary artist known for his mixed-media portraits, murals and live events, Vargas has painted murals around the globe, from his native Boyle Heights neighborhood to Paris. His work-in-progress “Angelus,” in downtown Pershing Square, is being painted on the side of a 14-story apartment building and is set to break the Guinness World Record for the largest mural completed by a single artist.

How To Get a Job on a Cruise Ship With No Experience

how to get a job on a cruise

Don’t forget to show enthusiasm and explain why you’re excited to work on that specific cruise line. For example, did you know that every cruise ship has at least one doctor? There’s also a firefighter on board, although fires on cruises are extremely rare. If you have little to no experience, chances are that you won’t be clearing $100,000 your first year. However, many positions are flexible, with room to advance as you gain seniority onboard. Depending on your job, you may be free to go ashore to enjoy ports or join a shore excursion without paying the normal fee.

However, in 2005, I took the plunge (pun intended) and a promotion – to Crew Training Officer – and worked full-time on ships until 2010. Working onboard cruise ships may be an unconventional career, but it is one of the most fulfilling ones I know of out there. With these additional specialized roles, you can see that the cruise ship industry offers diverse opportunities for those with a wide range of expertise, making it an attractive career choice for many. Consider the cruise ship jobs you know about based on what you have seen on a cruise ship. The obvious ones are ship’s officers, housekeeping staff, waitstaff, deckhands and entertainers. Think cosmetologists, photographers, expedition leaders, medical staff, booking agents and personal trainers.

However, for almost every other role onboard, most cruise lines do not require any post-secondary training. Instead, cruise lines prefer to see at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in a related role ashore. For example, if you are applying for an onboard retail sales position, the cruise line will want to see that you have 1-2 years of high-end retail sales experience.

Working on a cruise ship offers a unique opportunity to combine your passion for travel with your career aspirations. From the initial steps of researching cruise lines and job opportunities to completing the hiring process and starting your new job, the journey to working on a cruise ship requires careful preparation and dedication. Keep in mind that while having these qualifications and skills will increase your chances of securing a job on a cruise ship, each position may have additional requirements.

Each department plays a vital role in creating a seamless and enjoyable cruise experience for passengers while ensuring the efficient operation of the ship. They are floating paradises designed to provide guests with the ultimate vacation experience, combining travel, leisure, and entertainment. Now all that’s left is to pack your bags and prepare for the start of your contract date as a crew member. Be sure to fulfill any final requirements that your new employer may ask of you, such as up-to-date vaccination. If all goes well with your application, the cruise line will contact you for an interview. You may be subject to a screening session before an official interview to verify that you meet all the job requirements.

When preparing a cover letter and resume for a job on a cruise ship, it is imperative to specify the title of the job for which you are applying. Don’t leave it up to the cruise line or recruiter to decide because they won’t. Contracts for cruise ship roles vary depending on the job and cruise line, but on average most workers are employed for between four and eight months at a time. This allows workers to renew their contracts without committing to years of service. I’ve been on several cruises where waiters and bar staff have noticeable tattoos on their hands. It just might mean that you’re limited in terms of the jobs you can do or the cruise lines you can work for.

Our Youth Staff offer a variety of activities, including games, sports, science workshops, and educational programs. Individuals who are outgoing, enthusiastic, energetic and have an interest in entertaining kids of any age are encouraged to apply. The Assistant Food & Beverage Manager assists in the management and administration of all onboard Food & Beverage areas to achieve the highest levels of customer service, revenue generation, and cost control. Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization.

Many of them took other jobs in travel and tourism that didn’t involve spending long periods at sea. And then, when the demand for cruising returned, more vacancies became available. The global pause in cruising made it so much harder for a while, as there were thousands of experienced cruise ship workers who became out of work. Those who have chosen a career at sea may or may not have a primary residence. They often spend their 8-10 weeks off in between contracts traveling or visiting/staying with family.

If you’re craving more of a non-conventional tourism career on the sea, then securing a cruise ship job could be the best move for you! But before you say bon voyage, you may want to consider starting with an education first, which could help you gain the necessary skills to flourish in this industry. Now that you know which “archetype” is best suited for cruise ship life, let’s take a peek at some of the most common hospitality and food & beverage positions on cruise ships.

Whilst coveted jobs include working in the ship's retail shops, casino jobs and excursions; you may have to settle for housekeeping or spa work to actually get a job. Once you get the job, do NOT date any passengers on board - you will get fired. If you like to travel then it could be an ideal opportunity for you as you visit new locations all around the world, meet people and make new friends - all whilst getting paid and enhancing your resume. Remember to check the cruise line’s specific guidelines and regulations regarding packing restrictions and policies. By packing wisely and preparing for life onboard, you’ll be ready to embark on a rewarding and unforgettable journey working on a cruise ship. At the end of the day, which program you choose will likely depend on the cruise ship occupation that interests you the most and if it’s more geared toward hospitality or culinary arts.

Entry-level positions, such as galley cleaners, pot washers, and deckhands, typically have lower salaries, starting around $500 per month. However, these roles often come with free accommodations, meals, and the opportunity to travel the world, which can offset the lower pay. Some cruise ship jobs like Bridge Crew members or Technical positions require post-secondary training at a certified Marine School. However, the vast majority of cruise line jobs don’t need any post-secondary education.
